The Meaning and Message of Our Documentary "The Immigration Resident"
The Immigration Resident commemorates Latino immigrant history, our labor, our contribution to our state, and the collective struggle and resiliency community-based organizations have faced. On The Horizon Films captures the realities Latino immigrants live through in Eastern Washington to overcome an unjust immigration system, a global pandemic, the 2016 Trump red tap and unjust era, and systemic community barriers to justice.
The title "The Immigration Resident" refers to those who come to the US undocumented from other countries. It carries hidden meanings, such as a “dent” in the ratio or census of the residents in a specific community, suggesting that some Immigrants are not being accounted for in population numbers. It also implies that immigrants are present and positively impacting communities. When a father is separated from his 5-year-old child by Border Patrol, when a mother journeys across three countries to seek cancer treatment for her daughter, and when a city allows Border Patrol to racially profile people of color, the consequences are devastating to our community and future generations.
Latinos En Spokane has centered our efforts on going to where the community is, listening to needs, building trust, and providing technical support and wrap-around services directly to families navigating the complexities of immigration, education, healthcare, housing, and city resources. Our programs have created cultural visibility within the Latino and immigrant communities.
Our Center is open to the Spokane community and functions as a space for Latino and immigrant community members to ask questions and receive technical support connecting and registering to local resources.
Our office provides a visible, cultural, and reliable safe space for our community members.

Our Cultural events reflect the growing and diverse Latino immigrant population in the region. These events are more than celebrations, they foster a sense of belonging and create spaces to honor shared Latino heritage. The roots of these traditions run deep, drawing from Spain, Indigenous legacies, and Afro-Latino communities whose ancestral and cultural ties to Latin America predate the colonization of the Americas.
As our community grows, these celebrations have taken on even greater significance. They attract a diverse audience, including both Latino and non-Latino residents, providing opportunities for cultural exchange and fostering mutual understanding.
Featuring cultural displays, traditional and contemporary music, authentic cuisine, and enriching cultural activities, each event highlights the unique traditions and heritage of various Latin American countries. We look forward to continuing these traditions and creating spaces where our culture can thrive, allowing everyone to celebrate and share their cultural heritage
Our Cultural events are organized by community-led committees representing different Latin American countries.
